Damn dude. I never knew the details of what happened before. I can't really imagine the scale of what you're going through, but if I can ever do something to help you out, let me know.. particularly once you're able to go back to work (I know the one honest recruiter in CA) and/or ready to go to school (i.e. I'll give you my musings on community college options. ; P )

I was gonna write about my setup at some point, but I'm lazy and here is a teaser.
I am not using any hardware for the server. Just running a Virtual Private Server instance using Gentoo. I have a Linksys PAP2 on my home network, for converting 2 regular phone devices, fax machine, cordless phone, so they speak SIP to my Asterisk.

I was getting the same type of error
sox soxio: Failed reading `test.wav': unknown file type `auto'
Installing the rest of the codecs as you described solved it.

I'm with you I am 46 w/ DDD and life has been tough. SSI is a joke and I live on $339 from State Assistance. We all need to act and take back our Country . They should be sued for creating EGAD Evil Government Affective Disorder as most in our boat don't want to wake up. They even screwed us on the Tax Rebate and I've called the Whitehouse IRS Paper and Congressman who all basically said FU. I have found talking to those like us HELPS.
